John Ellerton,
Ni estis ja en mano Dia

John Ellerton,
The day Thou gavest, Lord, is ended

translated by Manfredo Ratislavo

1. Ni estis ja en mano Dia,   1. The day Thou gavest, Lord, is ended,
dum brilis super ni la Sun'.   The darkness falls at Thy behest;
Protektu nin per mano Via   To Thee our morning hymns ascended,
dumnokte, Dio, ankaŭ nun!   Thy praise shall sanctify our rest.

2. La ter' cirkulas ĝis la veno   2. We thank Thee that Thy church, unsleeping,
de l' nova tag', ripozas ni   While earth rolls onward into light,
dum tiu nokt' en Via beno1)   Through all the world her watch is keeping,
ĝis la mateno, kara Di'.   And rests not now by day or night.

3. Nun kiam en malhel' fordronas   3. As o’er each continent and island
la Sun' en tiu ĉi vesper',   The dawn leads on another day,
multvoĉe Via laŭdo sonas   The voice of prayer is never silent,
alialoke sur la Ter'.   Nor dies the strain of praise away.

4. Ĉar kiel estas ĉirkaŭanta   4. The sun that bids us rest is waking
la Teron lumo de l' maten',   Our brethren ’neath the western sky,
senĉese estas plusonanta   And hour by hour fresh lips are making
preĝado de la homoj jen.   Thy wondrous doings heard on high.

5. Ja estas, Dio ĉiopova,   5. So be it, Lord; Thy throne shall never,
senlima Via regno, nin   Like earth’s proud empires, pass away:
konduku al la tago nova   Thy kingdom stands, and grows forever,
en Via regno je la fin'!   Till all Thy creatures own Thy sway.
