		An ancient legend of the Rhine

Ne scias mi, kial subita		I cannot divine what it meaneth,
malgaj' en la koro naskiĝis;		This haunting nameless pain:
el tempo jam enterigita		A tale of the bygone ages
legendo al mi reviviĝis.		Keeps brooding through my brain:

Jam malvarmetiĝas l' aero,		The faint air cools in the gloaming,
la Rejno mallaŭte babilas,		And peaceful flows the Rhine,
per oro de l'sun' en vespero		The thirsty summits are drinking
la supro de l' monto rebrilas.		The sunset's flooding wine;

Plej belan knabinon mi vidas:		The loveliest maiden is sitting
en ora ornamo brilante,		High-throned in yon blue air,
sur supro de l' monto ŝi sidas,		Her golden jewels are shining,
la harojn mistere kombante.		She combs her golden hair;

La oran kombilon ŝi movas		She combs with comb that is golden,
kaj kantas tra l' pura aero,		And sings a weird refrain
kaj forto mirinda sin trovas		That steeps in a deadly enchantment
en tiu ĉi kant' de l'vespero.		The listener's ravished brain:

Ŝipet' iras sur la rivero,		The doomed in his drifting shallop,
ŝipisto ektremis de l' kanto,		Is tranced with the sad sweet tone,
kaj blinda por ĉiu danĝero		He sees not the yawing breakers,
rigardas li al la kantanto.		He sees but the maid alone:

Ha, baldaŭ ŝipisto la bela		The pitiless billwos engulf him!-
perdiĝis sub l' akvoturnado;		So perish sailor and bark;
ĝin Lorelej' faris kruela,		And this, with her baleful singing,
per sia mirinda kantado.		Is the Lorelei's gruesome work.
