		An ancient legend of the Rhine

Malgajon mi sentas en koro,	Ne scias mi, kial subita	I cannot divine what it meaneth,	Ich weiß nicht, was soll es bedeuten,
sed kial tia tim'?	malgaj' en la koro naskiĝis;	This haunting nameless pain:	daß ich so traurig bin;
Legendo el pratempa foro	el tempo jam enterigita	A tale of the bygone ages	ein Märchen aus alten Zeiten,
Vagadas tra mia anim'.	legendo al mi reviviĝis.	Keeps brooding through my brain:	das kommt mir nicht aus dem Sinn.

Jam fluas la Rejn' en malhelo,	Jam malvarmetiĝas l' aero,	The faint air cools in the gloaming,	Die Luft ist kühl und es dunkelt,

kaj ŝia beleco allogas	sur supro de l' monto ŝi sidas,	Her golden jewels are shining,	ihr goldnes Geschmeide blitzet,
kaj ŝia ora harar'.	la harojn mistere kombante.	She combs her golden hair;	sie kämmt ihr goldenes Haar.

Ŝi kombas ĝin, kantas sorĉige,	La oran kombilon ŝi movas	She combs with comb that is golden,	Sie kämmt es mit goldenem Kamme,
sirene kantas ŝi	kaj kantas tra l' pura aero,	And sings a weird refrain	und singt ein Lied dabei;
per neimagebla, mirige	kaj forto mirinda sin trovas	That steeps in a deadly enchantment	das hat eine wundersame,

Ne ĝenas lin rifo-kaskado,	kaj blinda por ĉiu danĝero	He sees not the yawing breakers,	er schaut nicht die Felsenriffe,
rigardas nur supren al ŝi!	rigardas li al la kantanto.	He sees but the maid alone:	er schaut nur hinauf in die Höh.

Ĝis tiras kun si al Rejn-fundo	Ha, baldaŭ ŝipisto la bela	The pitiless billwos engulf him!-	Ich glaube, die Wellen verschlingen
la ondoj lin kun boat'.	perdiĝis sub l' akvoturnado;	So perish sailor and bark;	am Ende Schiffer und Kahn;
Nun kuŝas li en la profundo	ĝin Lorelej' faris kruela,	And this, with her baleful singing,	und das hat mit ihrem Singen
