Heinrich Heine,
Die Lorelei

translated by L. W. Garnham   translated by Joachim Gießner   translated by N. N. 01   translated by Mark Twain

            An ancient legend of the Rhine

I do not know what it signifies.   Malgajon mi sentas en koro,   Ignoro, quid id sibi velit,   I cannot divine what it meaneth,   Ich weiß nicht, was soll es bedeuten,
That I am so sorrowful?   sed kial tia tim'?   Tristissimus cur sim,   This haunting nameless pain:   daß ich so traurig bin;
A fable of old Times so terrifies,   Legendo el pratempa foro   Antiqui aevi fabellam   A tale of the bygone ages   ein Märchen aus alten Zeiten,
Leaves my heart so thoughtful.   Vagadas tra mia anim'.   Cur saepe volverim.   Keeps brooding through my brain:   das kommt mir nicht aus dem Sinn.

The air is cool and it darkens,   Jam fluas la Rejn' en malhelo,   Vesperascit et frigescit,   The faint air cools in the gloaming,   Die Luft ist kühl und es dunkelt,
And calmly flows the Rhine;   kaj malvarmetas l' aer'.   Et Rhenus leniter it,   And peaceful flows the Rhine,   und ruhig fließt der Rhein;
The summit of the mountain hearkens   Sed brilas la mont' en orbelo   Cacumen montis lucescit,   The thirsty summits are drinking   der Gipfel des Berges funkelt
In evening sunshine line.   pro suna lum' de l' vesper'.   Dum Phoebus occidit.   The sunset's flooding wine;   im Abendsonnenschein.

The most beautiful Maiden entrances   Jen supre kabino provokas   Sedet in summo montis   The loveliest maiden is sitting   Die schönste Jungfrau sitzet
Above wonderfully there,   per ora juvelar',   Virgo pulcherrima,   High-throned in yon blue air,   dort oben wunderbar,
Her beautiful golden attire glances,   kaj ŝia beleco allogas   Auro nitet gemma frontis,   Her golden jewels are shining,   ihr goldnes Geschmeide blitzet,
She combs her golden hair.   kaj ŝia ora harar'.   Se pectit auricoma.   She combs her golden hair;   sie kämmt ihr goldenes Haar.

With golden comb so lustrous,   Ŝi kombas ĝin, kantas sorĉige,   Aureolo pectine pectit,   She combs with comb that is golden,   Sie kämmt es mit goldenem Kamme,
And thereby a song sings,   sirene kantas ŝi   Carmen canens procul,   And sings a weird refrain   und singt ein Lied dabei;
It has a tone so wondrous,   per neimagebla, mirige   Mirandum id habet modum   That steeps in a deadly enchantment   das hat eine wundersame,
That powerful melody rings.   potenca melodi'.   Nec non virilem simul.   The listener's ravished brain:   gewaltige Melodei.

The shipper in the little ship   Ŝipiston en eta boato   In cymba navitam mille   The doomed in his drifting shallop,   Den Schiffer im kleinen Schiffe
It effects with woe sad might;   Turmentas koremoci'.   Angores feri tenent,   Is tranced with the sad sweet tone,   ergreift es mit wildem Weh;
He does not see the rocky slip,   Ne ĝenas lin rifo-kaskado,   Non videt scopulos ille,   He sees not the yawing breakers,   er schaut nicht die Felsenriffe,
He only regards dreaded height.   rigardas nur supren al ŝi!   Ocli non si sursum vident.   He sees but the maid alone:   er schaut nur hinauf in die Höh.

I believe the turbulent waves   Ĝis tiras kun si al Rejn-fundo   Opinor undas devorare   The pitiless billwos engulf him!-   Ich glaube, die Wellen verschlingen
Swallow the last shipper and boat;   la ondoj lin kun boat'.   Nautam cum navicula,   So perish sailor and bark;   am Ende Schiffer und Kahn;
She with her singing craves   Nun kuŝas li en la profundo   Effecit solo canendo   And this, with her baleful singing,   und das hat mit ihrem Singen
All to visit her magic moat.   pro Loreleja kantad'.   Lurleia id dea.   Is the Lorelei's gruesome work.   die Lorelei getan.
