That I am so sorrowful?   Tristissimus cur sim,   sed kial tia tim'?   This haunting nameless pain:   Malgaja en la kor’.   malgaj' en la koro naskiĝis;   daß ich so traurig bin;   al mia tristema kor':
A fable of old Times so terrifies,   Antiqui aevi fabellam   Legendo el pratempa foro   A tale of the bygone ages   Antikva fabelo restas   el tempo jam enterigita   ein Märchen aus alten Zeiten,   Antikva legendo min kaptis,

The air is cool and it darkens,   Vesperascit et frigescit,   Jam fluas la Rejn' en malhelo,   The faint air cools in the gloaming,   Vespero jam ekmalheliĝas,   Jam malvarmetiĝas l' aero,   Die Luft ist kühl und es dunkelt,   La Rejno fluadas trankvile
And calmly flows the Rhine;   Et Rhenus leniter it,   kaj malvarmetas l' aer'.   And peaceful flows the Rhine,   Fluadas la Rejn’ en trankvil’,   la Rejno mallaŭte babilas,   und ruhig fließt der Rhein;   murmuras kiel mister',
The summit of the mountain hearkens   Cacumen montis lucescit,   Sed brilas la mont' en orbelo   The thirsty summits are drinking   La supro de l’ monto lumiĝas   per oro de l'sun' en vespero   der Gipfel des Berges funkelt   la supron ŝtonegan orumas

The most beautiful Maiden entrances   Sedet in summo montis   Jen supre kabino provokas   The loveliest maiden is sitting   Belega knabino jen tronas   Plej belan knabinon mi vidas:   Die schönste Jungfrau sitzet   Plej bela virgino jen sidas
Above wonderfully there,   Virgo pulcherrima,   per ora juvelar',   High-throned in yon blue air,   Kun ora juvelar’,   en ora ornamo brilante,   dort oben wunderbar,   mirinda sur la montet'
Her beautiful golden attire glances,   Auro nitet gemma frontis,   kaj ŝia beleco allogas   Her golden jewels are shining,   La belan vizaĝon kronas   sur supro de l' monto ŝi sidas,   ihr goldnes Geschmeide blitzet,   kaj ŝia oraĵo radias, 1)

It effects with woe sad might;   Angores feri tenent,   Turmentas koremoci'.   Is tranced with the sad sweet tone,   Ŝipisto dum sia vetur’;   ŝipisto ektremis de l' kanto,   ergreift es mit wildem Weh;   kaptiĝas per stranga dolor',
He does not see the rocky slip,   Non videt scopulos ille,   Ne ĝenas lin rifo-kaskado,   He sees not the yawing breakers,   Rifaron li ne priatentas,   kaj blinda por ĉiu danĝero   er schaut nicht die Felsenriffe,   la rifon li tute ignoras.
He only regards dreaded height.   Ocli non si sursum vident.   rigardas nur supren al ŝi!   He sees but the maid alone:   Al monto rigardas li nur.   rigardas li al la kantanto.   er schaut nur hinauf in die Höh.   atentas nur ŝin kun fervor'.

Swallow the last shipper and boat;   Nautam cum navicula,   la ondoj lin kun boat'.   So perish sailor and bark;   Ŝipisto kun sia boat’,   perdiĝis sub l' akvoturnado;   am Ende Schiffer und Kahn;   ŝipiston, ŝipeton je l' fin',

vorto "liedon", kio estas aŭ pres-eraro
aŭ neologismo inventita de la tradukinto

                            3) Mi, Manfred Retzlaff, enmetis la duoblan
punkton post la vorto "kredas". Ĝi mankas
en la origina traduko de Paul Christaller.
