Heinrich Heine,
The Lorelei

translated by N. N. 01   translated by Joachim Gießner   translated by Mark Twain

        An ancient legend of the Rhine

Ignoro, quid id sibi velit,   Malgajon mi sentas en koro,   I cannot divine what it meaneth,
Tristissimus cur sim,   sed kial tia tim'?   This haunting nameless pain:
Antiqui aevi fabellam   Legendo el pratempa foro   A tale of the bygone ages
Cur saepe volverim.   Vagadas tra mia anim'.   Keeps brooding through my brain:

Vesperascit et frigescit,   Jam fluas la Rejn' en malhelo,   The faint air cools in the gloaming,
Et Rhenus leniter it,   kaj malvarmetas l' aer'.   And peaceful flows the Rhine,
Cacumen montis lucescit,   Sed brilas la mont' en orbelo   The thirsty summits are drinking
Dum Phoebus occidit.   pro suna lum' de l' vesper'.   The sunset's flooding wine;

Sedet in summo montis   Jen supre kabino provokas   The loveliest maiden is sitting
Virgo pulcherrima,   per ora juvelar',   High-throned in yon blue air,
Auro nitet gemma frontis,   kaj ŝia beleco allogas   Her golden jewels are shining,
Se pectit auricoma.   kaj ŝia ora harar'.   She combs her golden hair;

Aureolo pectine pectit,   Ŝi kombas ĝin, kantas sorĉige,   She combs with comb that is golden,
Carmen canens procul,   sirene kantas ŝi   And sings a weird refrain
Mirandum id habet modum   per neimagebla, mirige   That steeps in a deadly enchantment
Nec non virilem simul.   potenca melodi'.   The listener's ravished brain:

In cymba navitam mille   Ŝipiston en eta boato   The doomed in his drifting shallop,
Angores feri tenent,   Turmentas koremoci'.   Is tranced with the sad sweet tone,
Non videt scopulos ille,   Ne ĝenas lin rifo-kaskado,   He sees not the yawing breakers,
Ocli non si sursum vident.   rigardas nur supren al ŝi!   He sees but the maid alone:

Opinor undas devorare   Ĝis tiras kun si al Rejn-fundo   The pitiless billwos engulf him!-
Nautam cum navicula,   la ondoj lin kun boat'.   So perish sailor and bark;
Effecit solo canendo   Nun kuŝas li en la profundo   And this, with her baleful singing,
Lurleia id dea.   pro Loreleja kantad'.   Is the Lorelei's gruesome work.
