              An ancient legend of the Rhine

Ne scias mi, kial mi estas   I do not know what it signifies.   Ignoro, quid id sibi velit,   Ich weiß nicht, was soll es bedeuten,   I cannot divine what it meaneth,
Malgaja en la kor’.   That I am so sorrowful?   Tristissimus cur sim,   daß ich so traurig bin;   This haunting nameless pain:
Antikva fabelo restas   A fable of old Times so terrifies,   Antiqui aevi fabellam   ein Märchen aus alten Zeiten,   A tale of the bygone ages
Por ĉiam en mia memor’.   Leaves my heart so thoughtful.   Cur saepe volverim.   das kommt mir nicht aus dem Sinn.   Keeps brooding through my brain:

Vespero jam ekmalheliĝas,   The air is cool and it darkens,   Vesperascit et frigescit,   Die Luft ist kühl und es dunkelt,   The faint air cools in the gloaming,
Fluadas la Rejn’ en trankvil’,   And calmly flows the Rhine;   Et Rhenus leniter it,   und ruhig fließt der Rhein;   And peaceful flows the Rhine,
La supro de l’ monto lumiĝas   The summit of the mountain hearkens   Cacumen montis lucescit,   der Gipfel des Berges funkelt   The thirsty summits are drinking
En vespersuna bril’.   In evening sunshine line.   Dum Phoebus occidit.   im Abendsonnenschein.   The sunset's flooding wine;

Belega knabino jen tronas   The most beautiful Maiden entrances   Sedet in summo montis   Die schönste Jungfrau sitzet   The loveliest maiden is sitting
Kun ora juvelar’,   Above wonderfully there,   Virgo pulcherrima,   dort oben wunderbar,   High-throned in yon blue air,
La belan vizaĝon kronas   Her beautiful golden attire glances,   Auro nitet gemma frontis,   ihr goldnes Geschmeide blitzet,   Her golden jewels are shining,
Mirinde la ora harar’.   She combs her golden hair.   Se pectit auricoma.   sie kämmt ihr goldenes Haar.   She combs her golden hair;

Ŝi uzas kombilon el oro   With golden comb so lustrous,   Aureolo pectine pectit,   Sie kämmt es mit goldenem Kamme,   She combs with comb that is golden,
Kaj dume kantas ŝi.   And thereby a song sings,   Carmen canens procul,   und singt ein Lied dabei;   And sings a weird refrain
Mirige tuŝas al koro   It has a tone so wondrous,   Mirandum id habet modum   das hat eine wundersame,   That steeps in a deadly enchantment
Sorĉiga la melodi’.   That powerful melody rings.   Nec non virilem simul.   gewaltige Melodei.   The listener's ravished brain:

Kaj sopiregon eksentas   The shipper in the little ship   In cymba navitam mille   Den Schiffer im kleinen Schiffe   The doomed in his drifting shallop,
Ŝipisto dum sia vetur’;   It effects with woe sad might;   Angores feri tenent,   ergreift es mit wildem Weh;   Is tranced with the sad sweet tone,
Rifaron li ne priatentas,   He does not see the rocky slip,   Non videt scopulos ille,   er schaut nicht die Felsenriffe,   He sees not the yawing breakers,
Al monto rigardas li nur.   He only regards dreaded height.   Ocli non si sursum vident.   er schaut nur hinauf in die Höh.   He sees but the maid alone:

Mi kredas, ke dronos finfine   I believe the turbulent waves   Opinor undas devorare   Ich glaube, die Wellen verschlingen   The pitiless billwos engulf him!-
Ŝipisto kun sia boat’,   Swallow the last shipper and boat;   Nautam cum navicula,   am Ende Schiffer und Kahn;   So perish sailor and bark;
Kaj tion kaŭzis feine   She with her singing craves   Effecit solo canendo   und das hat mit ihrem Singen   And this, with her baleful singing,
La Loreleja kantad’.   All to visit her magic moat.   Lurleia id dea.   die Lorelei getan.   Is the Lorelei's gruesome work.
