William Shakespeare,
Sonnet 1

William Shakespeare,
Sonedo 1

    translated by Manfredo Ratislavo

From fairest creatures we desire increase,   Pliiĝon ni deziras de la dioj,
That thereby beauty’s rose might never die,   Por ke pludaŭru ĉiam la belec’
But as the riper should by time decease,   Kaj ke per novaj hom-generacioj
His tender heir might bear his memory.   La viv’ ne ĉesu en la estontec’.

But thou, contracted to thine own bright eyes,   Sed vi, kontenta pri supraĵa sci’,
Feed’st thy light’s flame with self-substantial fuel,   De via fajr’ avara memnutranto,
Making a famine where abundance lies,   Malsaton en abundo faras vi,
Thyself thy foe, to thy sweet self too cruel.   De via mem’ vi estas minacanto!

Thou that art now the world’s fresh ornament.   De la juneco freŝa vi ornam’,
And only herald to the gaudy spring,   Heroldo sola de l’ printemp-sezon’,
Whithin thine own bud buriest thy content   Kaŝiĝas en la brusto via flam’,
And, tender churl, makest waste in niggarding.   Perdiĝas tiel la plej kara bon’.

Pity the world, or else this glutton be,   Eluzu vian donon, por ke ĝi
To eat the world’s due, by the grave and thee.   Ne neniiĝu en la tomb’ kun vi.
