That I am so sorrowful?	daß ich so traurig bin;	sed kial tia tim'?	malgaj' en la koro naskiĝis;
A fable of old Times so terrifies,	ein Märchen aus alten Zeiten,	Legendo el pratempa foro	el tempo jam enterigita
Leaves my heart so thoughtful.	das kommt mir nicht aus dem Sinn.	Vagadas tra mia anim'.	legendo al mi reviviĝis.

The air is cool and it darkens,	Die Luft ist kühl und es dunkelt,	Jam fluas la Rejn' en malhelo,	Jam malvarmetiĝas l' aero,

Her beautiful golden attire glances,	ihr goldnes Geschmeide blitzet,	kaj ŝia beleco allogas	sur supro de l' monto ŝi sidas,
She combs her golden hair.	sie kämmt ihr goldenes Haar.	kaj ŝia ora harar'.	la harojn mistere kombante.

With golden comb so lustrous,	Sie kämmt es mit goldenem Kamme,	Ŝi kombas ĝin, kantas sorĉige,	La oran kombilon ŝi movas

He does not see the rocky slip,	er schaut nicht die Felsenriffe,	Ne ĝenas lin rifo-kaskado,	kaj blinda por ĉiu danĝero
He only regards dreaded height.	er schaut nur hinauf in die Höh.	rigardas nur supren al ŝi!	rigardas li al la kantanto.

I believe the turbulent waves	Ich glaube, die Wellen verschlingen	Ĝis tiras kun si al Rejn-fundo	Ha, baldaŭ ŝipisto la bela
Swallow the last shipper and boat;	am Ende Schiffer und Kahn;	la ondoj lin kun boat'.	perdiĝis sub l' akvoturnado;
