			An ancient legend of the Rhine

Ne scias mi, kial subita	Ignoro, quid id sibi velit,	Ich weiß nicht, was soll es bedeuten,	I cannot divine what it meaneth,
malgaj' en la koro naskiĝis;	Tristissimus cur sim,	daß ich so traurig bin;	This haunting nameless pain:
el tempo jam enterigita	Antiqui aevi fabellam	ein Märchen aus alten Zeiten,	A tale of the bygone ages
legendo al mi reviviĝis.	Cur saepe volverim.	das kommt mir nicht aus dem Sinn.	Keeps brooding through my brain:

Jam malvarmetiĝas l' aero,	Vesperascit et frigescit,	Die Luft ist kühl und es dunkelt,	The faint air cools in the gloaming,
la Rejno mallaŭte babilas,	Et Rhenus leniter it,	und ruhig fließt der Rhein;	And peaceful flows the Rhine,
per oro de l'sun' en vespero	Cacumen montis lucescit,	der Gipfel des Berges funkelt	The thirsty summits are drinking
la supro de l' monto rebrilas.	Dum Phoebus occidit.	im Abendsonnenschein.	The sunset's flooding wine;

Plej belan knabinon mi vidas:	Sedet in summo montis	Die schönste Jungfrau sitzet	The loveliest maiden is sitting
en ora ornamo brilante,	Virgo pulcherrima,	dort oben wunderbar,	High-throned in yon blue air,
sur supro de l' monto ŝi sidas,	Auro nitet gemma frontis,	ihr goldnes Geschmeide blitzet,	Her golden jewels are shining,
la harojn mistere kombante.	Se pectit auricoma.	sie kämmt ihr goldenes Haar.	She combs her golden hair;

La oran kombilon ŝi movas	Aureolo pectine pectit,	Sie kämmt es mit goldenem Kamme,	She combs with comb that is golden,
kaj kantas tra l' pura aero,	Carmen canens procul,	und singt ein Lied dabei;	And sings a weird refrain
kaj forto mirinda sin trovas	Mirandum id habet modum	das hat eine wundersame,	That steeps in a deadly enchantment

Ŝipet' iras sur la rivero,	In cymba navitam mille	Den Schiffer im kleinen Schiffe	The doomed in his drifting shallop,
ŝipisto ektremis de l' kanto,	Angores feri tenent,	ergreift es mit wildem Weh;	Is tranced with the sad sweet tone,
kaj blinda por ĉiu danĝero	Non videt scopulos ille,	er schaut nicht die Felsenriffe,	He sees not the yawing breakers,
rigardas li al la kantanto.	Ocli non si sursum vident.	er schaut nur hinauf in die Höh.	He sees but the maid alone:

Ha, baldaŭ ŝipisto la bela	Opinor undas devorare	Ich glaube, die Wellen verschlingen	The pitiless billwos engulf him!-
perdiĝis sub l' akvoturnado;	Nautam cum navicula,	am Ende Schiffer und Kahn;	So perish sailor and bark;
ĝin Lorelej' faris kruela,	Effecit solo canendo	und das hat mit ihrem Singen	And this, with her baleful singing,
per sia mirinda kantado.	Lurleia id dea.	die Lorelei getan.	Is the Lorelei's gruesome work.
