Adriaen (François) Valéry,
We gather together

Adriaen (François) Valéry,
Oramus, vocamus

translated by Theodore Baker   translated by Eduard Kremser

We gather together to ask the Lord’s blessing;   1. Oramus, vocamus iustissimum Deum,
He chastens and hastens His will to make known.   Qui munit et punit severe reos
The wicked oppressing now cease from distressing.   Nec sinit peiores domare meliores;
Sing praises to His Name; He forgets not His own.   Sit semper Deo laus, qui respicit nos!

Beside us to guide us, our God with us joining,   3. Proeliatus ad latus adiuvit nos Deus;
Ordaining, maintaining His kingdom divine;   Agebat, volebat, ut vinceret ius.
So from the beginning the fight we were winning;   Vix sumus aggressi, sunt hostes oppressi;
Thou, Lord, were at our side, all glory be Thine!   Est, quod adiusti nos, triumphus Tuus.

We all do extol Thee, Thou Leader triumphant,   4. Lauderis, canteris, qui proelia regis!
And pray that Thou still our Defender will be.   Oramus, optamus, ut adiuves nos,
Let Thy congregation escape tribulation;   Ne, fidos quos nosti, subiecti sint hosti!
Thy Name be ever praised! O Lord, make us free!   Sit semper Tibi laus! fac nos liberos!
