Sun of the Sleepless! melancholy star!		Schlafloser Augen Sonne, zitternd Licht,
Whose tearful beam glows tremulously far,		Das durch die Finsternis der Nächte bricht,
That show’st the darkness thou canst not dispel,		Und das erhellte Dunkel besser zeigt,
How like art thou to Joy remembered well!		Wie die Erinnerung der Freude gleicht!
So gleams the past, the light of other days,		So scheint auch der vergangnen Tage Lust,
Which shines but warms not with its powerless rays:		Sie scheint, allein erwärmet nicht die Brust.
A night-beam Sorrow watcheth to behold,		Dem wachen Kammer strahlt sie wie ein Stern,
Distinct, but distant – clear – but, oh, how cold!		Klar - aber kalt; hell - aber ach! so fern.
