Heinrich Heine, | Heinrich Heine, | Heinrich Heine,
translated by Ludwig Lazarus Zamenhof | translated by Mark Twain | translated by L. W. Garnham
An ancient legend of the Rhine
Ne scias mi, kial subita | I cannot divine what it meaneth, | I do not know what it signifies.
malgaj' en la koro naskiĝis; | This haunting nameless pain: | That I am so sorrowful?
el tempo jam enterigita | A tale of the bygone ages | A fable of old Times so terrifies,
legendo al mi reviviĝis. | Keeps brooding through my brain: | Leaves my heart so thoughtful.
Jam malvarmetiĝas l' aero, | The faint air cools in the gloaming, | The air is cool and it darkens,
la Rejno mallaŭte babilas, | And peaceful flows the Rhine, | And calmly flows the Rhine;
per oro de l'sun' en vespero | The thirsty summits are drinking | The summit of the mountain hearkens
la supro de l' monto rebrilas. | The sunset's flooding wine; | In evening sunshine line.
Plej belan knabinon mi vidas: | The loveliest maiden is sitting | The most beautiful Maiden entrances
en ora ornamo brilante, | High-throned in yon blue air, | Above wonderfully there,
sur supro de l' monto ŝi sidas, | Her golden jewels are shining, | Her beautiful golden attire glances,
la harojn mistere kombante. | She combs her golden hair; | She combs her golden hair.
La oran kombilon ŝi movas | She combs with comb that is golden, | With golden comb so lustrous,
kaj kantas tra l' pura aero, | And sings a weird refrain | And thereby a song sings,
kaj forto mirinda sin trovas | That steeps in a deadly enchantment | It has a tone so wondrous,
en tiu ĉi kant' de l'vespero. | The listener's ravished brain: | That powerful melody rings.
Ŝipet' iras sur la rivero, | The doomed in his drifting shallop, | The shipper in the little ship
ŝipisto ektremis de l' kanto, | Is tranced with the sad sweet tone, | It effects with woe sad might;
kaj blinda por ĉiu danĝero | He sees not the yawing breakers, | He does not see the rocky slip,
rigardas li al la kantanto. | He sees but the maid alone: | He only regards dreaded height.
Ha, baldaŭ ŝipisto la bela | The pitiless billwos engulf him!- | I believe the turbulent waves
perdiĝis sub l' akvoturnado; | So perish sailor and bark; | Swallow the last shipper and boat;
ĝin Lorelej' faris kruela, | And this, with her baleful singing, | She with her singing craves
per sia mirinda kantado. | Is the Lorelei's gruesome work. | All to visit her magic moat.
