I cannot divine what it meaneth,	Ignoro, quid id sibi velit,	Ich weiß nicht, was soll es bedeuten,	Ne scias mi, kio okazis	I do not know what it signifies.
This haunting nameless pain:	Tristissimus cur sim,	daß ich so traurig bin;	al mia tristema kor':	That I am so sorrowful?
A tale of the bygone ages	Antiqui aevi fabellam	ein Märchen aus alten Zeiten,	Antikva legendo min kaptis,	A fable of old Times so terrifies,
Keeps brooding through my brain:	Cur saepe volverim.	das kommt mir nicht aus dem Sinn.	ne cedas el mia memor'.	Leaves my heart so thoughtful.

The faint air cools in the gloaming,	Vesperascit et frigescit,	Die Luft ist kühl und es dunkelt,	La Rejno fluadas trankvile	The air is cool and it darkens,
And peaceful flows the Rhine,	Et Rhenus leniter it,	und ruhig fließt der Rhein;	murmuras kiel mister',	And calmly flows the Rhine;
The thirsty summits are drinking	Cacumen montis lucescit,	der Gipfel des Berges funkelt	la supron ŝtonegan orumas	The summit of the mountain hearkens

High-throned in yon blue air,	Virgo pulcherrima,	dort oben wunderbar,	mirinda sur la montet'	Above wonderfully there,
Her golden jewels are shining,	Auro nitet gemma frontis,	ihr goldnes Geschmeide blitzet,	kaj ŝia oraĵo radias, ¹⁾	Her beautiful golden attire glances,

She combs with comb that is golden,	Aureolo pectine pectit,	Sie kämmt es mit goldenem Kamme,	Ŝi kombas la oran hararon	With golden comb so lustrous,
And sings a weird refrain	Carmen canens procul,	und singt ein Lied dabei;	abundan per ora kombil',	And thereby a song sings,
That steeps in a deadly enchantment	Mirandum id habet modum	das hat eine wundersame,	kantante misteran lidon, ²⁾	It has a tone so wondrous,

The doomed in his drifting shallop,	In cymba navitam mille	Den Schiffer im kleinen Schiffe	Ŝipisto en sia ŝipeto	The shipper in the little ship
Is tranced with the sad sweet tone,	Angores feri tenent,	ergreift es mit wildem Weh;	kaptiĝas per stranga dolor',	It effects with woe sad might;
He sees not the yawing breakers,	Non videt scopulos ille,	er schaut nicht die Felsenriffe,	la rifon li tute ignoras.	He does not see the rocky slip,
He sees but the maid alone:	Ocli non si sursum vident.	er schaut nur hinauf in die Höh.	atentas nur ŝin kun fervor'.	He only regards dreaded height.

The pitiless billwos engulf him!-	Opinor undas devorare	Ich glaube, die Wellen verschlingen	Mi kredas: la ondoj englutas ³⁾	I believe the turbulent waves
So perish sailor and bark;	Nautam cum navicula,	am Ende Schiffer und Kahn;	ŝipiston, ŝipeton je l' fin',	Swallow the last shipper and boat;
And this, with her baleful singing,	Effecit solo canendo	und das hat mit ihrem Singen	kaj kulpa pri tio nur estas	She with her singing craves
Is the Lorelei's gruesome work.	Lurleia id dea.	die Lorelei getan.	kantado de la virin'.	All to visit her magic moat.

			1) En la sube menciita kajero, el kiu mi, Manfred Retzlaff, kopiis tiun ĉi esperantigon, la linio tekstas: "kaj sia oraĵo radias", kun "sia" anstataŭ "ŝia"'. Tio ŝajne estas aŭ pres-eraro aŭ gramatika eraro de la tradukinto.
			2) En la origina versio troviĝas tie ĉi la vorto "liedon", kio estas aŭ pres-eraro aŭ neologismo inventita de la tradukinto Paul Christaller.
			3) Mi, Manfred Retzlaff, enmetis la duoblan punkton post la vorto "kredas". Ĝi mankas en la origina traduko de Paul Christaller.
