That I am so sorrowful?	al mia tristema kor':	pro kio tia trist'?	daß ich so traurig bin;
A fable of old Times so terrifies,	Antikva legendo min kaptis,	Fabel' el antikva foro	ein Märchen aus alten Zeiten,
Leaves my heart so thoughtful.	ne cedas el mia memor'.	ne lasas de mi kun persist'.	das kommt mir nicht aus dem Sinn.

The air is cool and it darkens,	La Rejno fluadas trankvile	Aere fridetas, trankvilas,	Die Luft ist kühl und es dunkelt,
And calmly flows the Rhine;	murmuras kiel mister',	malhelas jam la Rejn'.	und ruhig fließt der Rhein;
The summit of the mountain hearkens	la supron ŝtonegan orumas	La monto surpinte brilas	der Gipfel des Berges funkelt

The most beautiful Maiden entrances	Plej bela virgino jen sidas	Tre ĉarma feino sidas,	Die schönste Jungfrau sitzet
Above wonderfully there,	mirinda sur la montet'	jen supre por ador';	dort oben wunderbar,
Her beautiful golden attire glances,	kaj ŝia oraĵo radias, ¹⁾	la ora ornamo ridas;	ihr goldnes Geschmeide blitzet,
She combs her golden hair.	ŝi logas kiel magnet'.	ŝi kombas harojn el or'.	sie kämmt ihr goldenes Haar.

With golden comb so lustrous,	Ŝi kombas la oran hararon	Ŝi kombas per ora kombilo	Sie kämmt es mit goldenem Kamme,

He does not see the rocky slip,	la rifon li tute ignoras.	Li ja la rifojn ne vidas',	er schaut nicht die Felsenriffe,
He only regards dreaded height.	atentas nur ŝin kun fervor'.	li vidas nur supren sen halt'.	er schaut nur hinauf in die Höh.

I believe the turbulent waves	Mi kredas: la ondoj englutas ³⁾	Mi kredas, ke ondoj tiras	Ich glaube, die Wellen verschlingen
Swallow the last shipper and boat;	ŝipiston, ŝipeton je l' fin',	la ŝipon funden de l' Rejn';	am Ende Schiffer und Kahn;
She with her singing craves	kaj kulpa pri tio nur estas	kaj tio de l' kant' eliras	und das hat mit ihrem Singen

	1) En la sube menciita kajero, el kiu mi, Manfred Retzlaff, kopiis tiun ĉi esperantigon, la linio tekstas: "kaj sia oraĵo radias", kun "sia" anstataŭ "ŝia"'. Tio ŝajne estas aŭ pres-eraro aŭ gramatika eraro de la tradukinto.
	2) En la origina versio troviĝas tie ĉi la vorto "liedon", kio estas aŭ pres-eraro aŭ neologismo inventita de la tradukinto Paul Christaller.
	3) Mi, Manfred Retzlaff, enmetis la duoblan punkton post la vorto "kredas". Ĝi mankas en la origina traduko de Paul Christaller.
