That I am so sorrowful?	malgaj' en la koro naskiĝis;	sed kial tia tim'?	This haunting nameless pain:	daß ich so traurig bin;	al mia tristema kor':
A fable of old Times so terrifies,	el tempo jam enterigita	Legendo el pratempa foro	A tale of the bygone ages	ein Märchen aus alten Zeiten,	Antikva legendo min kaptis,

Her beautiful golden attire glances,	sur supro de l' monto ŝi sidas,	kaj ŝia beleco allogas	Her golden jewels are shining,	ihr goldnes Geschmeide blitzet,	kaj ŝia oraĵo radias, ¹⁾

It effects with woe sad might;	ŝipisto ektremis de l' kanto,	Turmentas koremoci'.	Is tranced with the sad sweet tone,	ergreift es mit wildem Weh;	kaptiĝas per stranga dolor',
He does not see the rocky slip,	kaj blinda por ĉiu danĝero	Ne ĝenas lin rifo-kaskado,	He sees not the yawing breakers,	er schaut nicht die Felsenriffe,	la rifon li tute ignoras.
He only regards dreaded height.	rigardas li al la kantanto.	rigardas nur supren al ŝi!	He sees but the maid alone:	er schaut nur hinauf in die Höh.	atentas nur ŝin kun fervor'.

I believe the turbulent waves	Ha, baldaŭ ŝipisto la bela	Ĝis tiras kun si al Rejn-fundo	The pitiless billwos engulf him!-	Ich glaube, die Wellen verschlingen	Mi kredas: la ondoj englutas ³⁾

					1) En la sube menciita kajero, el kiu mi, Manfred Retzlaff, kopiis tiun ĉi esperantigon, la linio tekstas: "kaj sia oraĵo radias", kun "sia" anstataŭ "ŝia"'. Tio ŝajne estas aŭ pres-eraro aŭ gramatika eraro de la tradukinto.
					2) En la origina versio troviĝas tie ĉi la vorto "liedon", kio estas aŭ pres-eraro aŭ neologismo inventita de la tradukinto Paul Christaller.
					3) Mi, Manfred Retzlaff, enmetis la duoblan punkton post la vorto "kredas". Ĝi mankas en la origina traduko de Paul Christaller.
