I do not know what it signifies.	Ne scias mi, kial mi estas	Ne scias mi, kial subita	Min kaptas malgaj' en la koro,	I cannot divine what it meaneth,
That I am so sorrowful?	Malgaja en la kor’.	malgaj' en la koro naskiĝis;	pro kio tia trist'?	This haunting nameless pain:
A fable of old Times so terrifies,	Antikva fabelo restas	el tempo jam enterigita	Fabel' el antikva foro	A tale of the bygone ages
Leaves my heart so thoughtful.	Por ĉiam en mia memor’.	legendo al mi reviviĝis.	ne lasas de mi kun persist'.	Keeps brooding through my brain:

The air is cool and it darkens,	Vespero jam ekmalheliĝas,	Jam malvarmetiĝas l' aero,	Aere fridetas, trankvilas,	The faint air cools in the gloaming,
And calmly flows the Rhine;	Fluadas la Rejn’ en trankvil’,	la Rejno mallaŭte babilas,	malhelas jam la Rejn'.	And peaceful flows the Rhine,
The summit of the mountain hearkens	La supro de l’ monto lumiĝas	per oro de l'sun' en vespero	La monto surpinte brilas	The thirsty summits are drinking

The most beautiful Maiden entrances	Belega knabino jen tronas	Plej belan knabinon mi vidas:	Tre ĉarma feino sidas,	The loveliest maiden is sitting
Above wonderfully there,	Kun ora juvelar’,	en ora ornamo brilante,	jen supre por ador';	High-throned in yon blue air,
Her beautiful golden attire glances,	La belan vizaĝon kronas	sur supro de l' monto ŝi sidas,	la ora ornamo ridas;	Her golden jewels are shining,
She combs her golden hair.	Mirinde la ora harar’.	la harojn mistere kombante.	ŝi kombas harojn el or'.	She combs her golden hair;

With golden comb so lustrous,	Ŝi uzas kombilon el oro	La oran kombilon ŝi movas	Ŝi kombas per ora kombilo	She combs with comb that is golden,
And thereby a song sings,	Kaj dume kantas ŝi.	kaj kantas tra l' pura aero,	kaj kantas kun pasi';	And sings a weird refrain
It has a tone so wondrous,	Mirige tuŝas al koro	kaj forto mirinda sin trovas	mirigas min la elbrilo	That steeps in a deadly enchantment
That powerful melody rings.	Sorĉiga la melodi’.	en tiu ĉi kant' de l'vespero.	kaj forto de l' melodi'.	The listener's ravished brain:

The shipper in the little ship	Kaj sopiregon eksentas	Ŝipet' iras sur la rivero,	Ŝipisto ŝipeton gvidas,	The doomed in his drifting shallop,
It effects with woe sad might;	Ŝipisto dum sia vetur’;	ŝipisto ektremis de l' kanto,	lin kaptas ve' de ekzalt'.	Is tranced with the sad sweet tone,
He does not see the rocky slip,	Rifaron li ne priatentas,	kaj blinda por ĉiu danĝero	Li ja la rifojn ne vidas',	He sees not the yawing breakers,
He only regards dreaded height.	Al monto rigardas li nur.	rigardas li al la kantanto.	li vidas nur supren sen halt'.	He sees but the maid alone:

I believe the turbulent waves	Mi kredas, ke dronos finfine	Ha, baldaŭ ŝipisto la bela	Mi kredas, ke ondoj tiras	The pitiless billwos engulf him!-
Swallow the last shipper and boat;	Ŝipisto kun sia boat’,	perdiĝis sub l' akvoturnado;	la ŝipon funden de l' Rejn';	So perish sailor and bark;
She with her singing craves	Kaj tion kaŭzis feine	ĝin Lorelej' faris kruela,	kaj tio de l' kant' eliras	And this, with her baleful singing,
All to visit her magic moat.	La Loreleja kantad’.	per sia mirinda kantado.	de Lorelaj-siren'.	Is the Lorelei's gruesome work.
