An ancient legend of the Rhine

Min kaptas malgaj' en la koro,   I cannot divine what it meaneth,   Ne scias mi, kial subita   I do not know what it signifies.   Ignoro, quid id sibi velit,
pro kio tia trist'?   This haunting nameless pain:   malgaj' en la koro naskiĝis;   That I am so sorrowful?   Tristissimus cur sim,
Fabel' el antikva foro   A tale of the bygone ages   el tempo jam enterigita   A fable of old Times so terrifies,   Antiqui aevi fabellam
ne lasas de mi kun persist'.   Keeps brooding through my brain:   legendo al mi reviviĝis.   Leaves my heart so thoughtful.   Cur saepe volverim.

Aere fridetas, trankvilas,   The faint air cools in the gloaming,   Jam malvarmetiĝas l' aero,   The air is cool and it darkens,   Vesperascit et frigescit,
malhelas jam la Rejn'.   And peaceful flows the Rhine,   la Rejno mallaŭte babilas,   And calmly flows the Rhine;   Et Rhenus leniter it,
La monto surpinte brilas   The thirsty summits are drinking   per oro de l'sun' en vespero   The summit of the mountain hearkens   Cacumen montis lucescit,
vespere en rava scen'.   The sunset's flooding wine;   la supro de l' monto rebrilas.   In evening sunshine line.   Dum Phoebus occidit.

Tre ĉarma feino sidas,   The loveliest maiden is sitting   Plej belan knabinon mi vidas:   The most beautiful Maiden entrances   Sedet in summo montis
jen supre por ador';   High-throned in yon blue air,   en ora ornamo brilante,   Above wonderfully there,   Virgo pulcherrima,
la ora ornamo ridas;   Her golden jewels are shining,   sur supro de l' monto ŝi sidas,   Her beautiful golden attire glances,   Auro nitet gemma frontis,
ŝi kombas harojn el or'.   She combs her golden hair;   la harojn mistere kombante.   She combs her golden hair.   Se pectit auricoma.

Ŝi kombas per ora kombilo   She combs with comb that is golden,   La oran kombilon ŝi movas   With golden comb so lustrous,   Aureolo pectine pectit,
kaj kantas kun pasi';   And sings a weird refrain   kaj kantas tra l' pura aero,   And thereby a song sings,   Carmen canens procul,
mirigas min la elbrilo   That steeps in a deadly enchantment   kaj forto mirinda sin trovas   It has a tone so wondrous,   Mirandum id habet modum
kaj forto de l' melodi'.   The listener's ravished brain:   en tiu ĉi kant' de l'vespero.   That powerful melody rings.   Nec non virilem simul.

Ŝipisto ŝipeton gvidas,   The doomed in his drifting shallop,   Ŝipet' iras sur la rivero,   The shipper in the little ship   In cymba navitam mille
lin kaptas ve' de ekzalt'.   Is tranced with the sad sweet tone,   ŝipisto ektremis de l' kanto,   It effects with woe sad might;   Angores feri tenent,
Li ja la rifojn ne vidas',   He sees not the yawing breakers,   kaj blinda por ĉiu danĝero   He does not see the rocky slip,   Non videt scopulos ille,
li vidas nur supren sen halt'.   He sees but the maid alone:   rigardas li al la kantanto.   He only regards dreaded height.   Ocli non si sursum vident.

Mi kredas, ke ondoj tiras   The pitiless billwos engulf him!-   Ha, baldaŭ ŝipisto la bela   I believe the turbulent waves   Opinor undas devorare
la ŝipon funden de l' Rejn';   So perish sailor and bark;   perdiĝis sub l' akvoturnado;   Swallow the last shipper and boat;   Nautam cum navicula,
kaj tio de l' kant' eliras   And this, with her baleful singing,   ĝin Lorelej' faris kruela,   She with her singing craves   Effecit solo canendo
de Lorelaj-siren'.   Is the Lorelei's gruesome work.   per sia mirinda kantado.   All to visit her magic moat.   Lurleia id dea.
