    An ancient legend of the Rhine

Ne scias mi, kial subita   I cannot divine what it meaneth,   Ignoro, quid id sibi velit,   Min kaptas malgaj' en la koro,   I do not know what it signifies.
malgaj' en la koro naskiĝis;   This haunting nameless pain:   Tristissimus cur sim,   pro kio tia trist'?   That I am so sorrowful?
el tempo jam enterigita   A tale of the bygone ages   Antiqui aevi fabellam   Fabel' el antikva foro   A fable of old Times so terrifies,
legendo al mi reviviĝis.   Keeps brooding through my brain:   Cur saepe volverim.   ne lasas de mi kun persist'.   Leaves my heart so thoughtful.

Jam malvarmetiĝas l' aero,   The faint air cools in the gloaming,   Vesperascit et frigescit,   Aere fridetas, trankvilas,   The air is cool and it darkens,
la Rejno mallaŭte babilas,   And peaceful flows the Rhine,   Et Rhenus leniter it,   malhelas jam la Rejn'.   And calmly flows the Rhine;
per oro de l'sun' en vespero   The thirsty summits are drinking   Cacumen montis lucescit,   La monto surpinte brilas   The summit of the mountain hearkens
la supro de l' monto rebrilas.   The sunset's flooding wine;   Dum Phoebus occidit.   vespere en rava scen'.   In evening sunshine line.

Plej belan knabinon mi vidas:   The loveliest maiden is sitting   Sedet in summo montis   Tre ĉarma feino sidas,   The most beautiful Maiden entrances
en ora ornamo brilante,   High-throned in yon blue air,   Virgo pulcherrima,   jen supre por ador';   Above wonderfully there,
sur supro de l' monto ŝi sidas,   Her golden jewels are shining,   Auro nitet gemma frontis,   la ora ornamo ridas;   Her beautiful golden attire glances,
la harojn mistere kombante.   She combs her golden hair;   Se pectit auricoma.   ŝi kombas harojn el or'.   She combs her golden hair.

La oran kombilon ŝi movas   She combs with comb that is golden,   Aureolo pectine pectit,   Ŝi kombas per ora kombilo   With golden comb so lustrous,
kaj kantas tra l' pura aero,   And sings a weird refrain   Carmen canens procul,   kaj kantas kun pasi';   And thereby a song sings,
kaj forto mirinda sin trovas   That steeps in a deadly enchantment   Mirandum id habet modum   mirigas min la elbrilo   It has a tone so wondrous,
en tiu ĉi kant' de l'vespero.   The listener's ravished brain:   Nec non virilem simul.   kaj forto de l' melodi'.   That powerful melody rings.

Ŝipet' iras sur la rivero,   The doomed in his drifting shallop,   In cymba navitam mille   Ŝipisto ŝipeton gvidas,   The shipper in the little ship
ŝipisto ektremis de l' kanto,   Is tranced with the sad sweet tone,   Angores feri tenent,   lin kaptas ve' de ekzalt'.   It effects with woe sad might;
kaj blinda por ĉiu danĝero   He sees not the yawing breakers,   Non videt scopulos ille,   Li ja la rifojn ne vidas',   He does not see the rocky slip,
rigardas li al la kantanto.   He sees but the maid alone:   Ocli non si sursum vident.   li vidas nur supren sen halt'.   He only regards dreaded height.

Ha, baldaŭ ŝipisto la bela   The pitiless billwos engulf him!-   Opinor undas devorare   Mi kredas, ke ondoj tiras   I believe the turbulent waves
perdiĝis sub l' akvoturnado;   So perish sailor and bark;   Nautam cum navicula,   la ŝipon funden de l' Rejn';   Swallow the last shipper and boat;
ĝin Lorelej' faris kruela,   And this, with her baleful singing,   Effecit solo canendo   kaj tio de l' kant' eliras   She with her singing craves
per sia mirinda kantado.   Is the Lorelei's gruesome work.   Lurleia id dea.   de Lorelaj-siren'.   All to visit her magic moat.
