		An ancient legend of the Rhine

Ne scias mi, kial subita	Min kaptas malgaj' en la koro,	I cannot divine what it meaneth,
malgaj' en la koro naskiĝis;	pro kio tia trist'?	This haunting nameless pain:
el tempo jam enterigita	Fabel' el antikva foro	A tale of the bygone ages
legendo al mi reviviĝis.	ne lasas de mi kun persist'.	Keeps brooding through my brain:

Jam malvarmetiĝas l' aero,	Aere fridetas, trankvilas,	The faint air cools in the gloaming,
la Rejno mallaŭte babilas,	malhelas jam la Rejn'.	And peaceful flows the Rhine,
per oro de l'sun' en vespero	La monto surpinte brilas	The thirsty summits are drinking
la supro de l' monto rebrilas.	vespere en rava scen'.	The sunset's flooding wine;

Plej belan knabinon mi vidas:	Tre ĉarma feino sidas,	The loveliest maiden is sitting
en ora ornamo brilante,	jen supre por ador';	High-throned in yon blue air,
sur supro de l' monto ŝi sidas,	la ora ornamo ridas;	Her golden jewels are shining,
la harojn mistere kombante.	ŝi kombas harojn el or'.	She combs her golden hair;

La oran kombilon ŝi movas	Ŝi kombas per ora kombilo	She combs with comb that is golden,
kaj kantas tra l' pura aero,	kaj kantas kun pasi';	And sings a weird refrain
kaj forto mirinda sin trovas	mirigas min la elbrilo	That steeps in a deadly enchantment
en tiu ĉi kant' de l'vespero.	kaj forto de l' melodi'.	The listener's ravished brain:

Ŝipet' iras sur la rivero,	Ŝipisto ŝipeton gvidas,	The doomed in his drifting shallop,
ŝipisto ektremis de l' kanto,	lin kaptas ve' de ekzalt'.	Is tranced with the sad sweet tone,
kaj blinda por ĉiu danĝero	Li ja la rifojn ne vidas',	He sees not the yawing breakers,
rigardas li al la kantanto.	li vidas nur supren sen halt'.	He sees but the maid alone:

Ha, baldaŭ ŝipisto la bela	Mi kredas, ke ondoj tiras	The pitiless billwos engulf him!-
perdiĝis sub l' akvoturnado;	la ŝipon funden de l' Rejn';	So perish sailor and bark;
ĝin Lorelej' faris kruela,	kaj tio de l' kant' eliras	And this, with her baleful singing,
per sia mirinda kantado.	de Lorelaj-siren'.	Is the Lorelei's gruesome work.
