William Shakespeare,
Sonedo 1

William Shakespeare,
Sonnet 1

translated by Manfredo Ratislavo

Pliiĝon ni deziras de la dioj,   From fairest creatures we desire increase,
Por ke pludaŭru ĉiam la belec’   That thereby beauty’s rose might never die,
Kaj ke per novaj hom-generacioj   But as the riper should by time decease,
La viv’ ne ĉesu en la estontec’.   His tender heir might bear his memory.

Sed vi, kontenta pri supraĵa sci’,   But thou, contracted to thine own bright eyes,
De via fajr’ avara memnutranto,   Feed’st thy light’s flame with self-substantial fuel,
Malsaton en abundo faras vi,   Making a famine where abundance lies,
De via mem’ vi estas minacanto!   Thyself thy foe, to thy sweet self too cruel.

De la juneco freŝa vi ornam’,   Thou that art now the world’s fresh ornament.
Heroldo sola de l’ printemp-sezon’,   And only herald to the gaudy spring,
Kaŝiĝas en la brusto via flam’,   Whithin thine own bud buriest thy content
Perdiĝas tiel la plej kara bon’.   And, tender churl, makest waste in niggarding.

Eluzu vian donon, por ke ĝi   Pity the world, or else this glutton be,
Ne neniiĝu en la tomb’ kun vi.   To eat the world’s due, by the grave and thee.
