		An ancient legend of the Rhine

Ne scias mi, kial subita	Min kaptas malgaj' en la koro,	I cannot divine what it meaneth,	Ich weiß nicht, was soll es bedeuten,
malgaj' en la koro naskiĝis;	pro kio tia trist'?	This haunting nameless pain:	daß ich so traurig bin;
el tempo jam enterigita	Fabel' el antikva foro	A tale of the bygone ages	ein Märchen aus alten Zeiten,
legendo al mi reviviĝis.	ne lasas de mi kun persist'.	Keeps brooding through my brain:	das kommt mir nicht aus dem Sinn.

Jam malvarmetiĝas l' aero,	Aere fridetas, trankvilas,	The faint air cools in the gloaming,	Die Luft ist kühl und es dunkelt,
la Rejno mallaŭte babilas,	malhelas jam la Rejn'.	And peaceful flows the Rhine,	und ruhig fließt der Rhein;
per oro de l'sun' en vespero	La monto surpinte brilas	The thirsty summits are drinking	der Gipfel des Berges funkelt
la supro de l' monto rebrilas.	vespere en rava scen'.	The sunset's flooding wine;	im Abendsonnenschein.

Plej belan knabinon mi vidas:	Tre ĉarma feino sidas,	The loveliest maiden is sitting	Die schönste Jungfrau sitzet
en ora ornamo brilante,	jen supre por ador';	High-throned in yon blue air,	dort oben wunderbar,
sur supro de l' monto ŝi sidas,	la ora ornamo ridas;	Her golden jewels are shining,	ihr goldnes Geschmeide blitzet,
la harojn mistere kombante.	ŝi kombas harojn el or'.	She combs her golden hair;	sie kämmt ihr goldenes Haar.

La oran kombilon ŝi movas	Ŝi kombas per ora kombilo	She combs with comb that is golden,	Sie kämmt es mit goldenem Kamme,
kaj kantas tra l' pura aero,	kaj kantas kun pasi';	And sings a weird refrain	und singt ein Lied dabei;
kaj forto mirinda sin trovas	mirigas min la elbrilo	That steeps in a deadly enchantment	das hat eine wundersame,

Ŝipet' iras sur la rivero,	Ŝipisto ŝipeton gvidas,	The doomed in his drifting shallop,	Den Schiffer im kleinen Schiffe
ŝipisto ektremis de l' kanto,	lin kaptas ve' de ekzalt'.	Is tranced with the sad sweet tone,	ergreift es mit wildem Weh;
kaj blinda por ĉiu danĝero	Li ja la rifojn ne vidas',	He sees not the yawing breakers,	er schaut nicht die Felsenriffe,
rigardas li al la kantanto.	li vidas nur supren sen halt'.	He sees but the maid alone:	er schaut nur hinauf in die Höh.

Ha, baldaŭ ŝipisto la bela	Mi kredas, ke ondoj tiras	The pitiless billwos engulf him!-	Ich glaube, die Wellen verschlingen
perdiĝis sub l' akvoturnado;	la ŝipon funden de l' Rejn';	So perish sailor and bark;	am Ende Schiffer und Kahn;
ĝin Lorelej' faris kruela,	kaj tio de l' kant' eliras	And this, with her baleful singing,	und das hat mit ihrem Singen
