William Shakespeare,
Sonett 1

William Shakespeare,
Sonnet 1

translated by Johann Gottlob Regis

Vom schönsten Wesen wünschen wir Vermehrung,   From fairest creatures we desire increase,
Damit der Schönheit Ros’ unsterblich sei,   That thereby beauty’s rose might never die,
Und, wenn das Reife stirbt durch Zeitverheerung,   But as the riper should by time decease,
Sein Bild in zarten Erben sich erneu’.   His tender heir might bear his memory.

Doch du, in eigner Augen Schein begnügt,   But thou, contracted to thine own bright eyes,
Nährst mit selbswesentlichem Stoff dein Feuer,   Feed’st thy light’s flame with self-substantial fuel,
Machst Hungersnot, wo Überfülle liegt,   Making a famine where abundance lies,
Dir selber Feind, des holden Ichs Bedräuer!   Thyself thy foe, to thy sweet self too cruel.

Der jungen Tage frische Zierde du   Thou that art now the world’s fresh ornament.
Und einz’ger Herold bunter Frühlingszeit,   And only herald to the gaudy spring,
Bebräbst in eigner Knospe deine Ruh,   Whithin thine own bud buriest thy content
Vergeudest kargend, zarte Selbstigkeit!   And, tender churl, makest waste in niggarding.

Hab Mitleid mit der Welt! Verschling’ aus Gier   Pity the world, or else this glutton be,
Ihr Pflichtteil nicht in deinem Grab mit dir.   To eat the world’s due, by the grave and thee.
