An ancient legend of the Rhine                    
 
I cannot divine what it meaneth,   Ne scias mi, kial subita   Ich weiß nicht, was soll es bedeuten,   Ignoro, quid id sibi velit,   Min kaptas malgaj' en la koro,   I do not know what it signifies.
This haunting nameless pain:   malgaj' en la koro naskiĝis;   daß ich so traurig bin;   Tristissimus cur sim,   pro kio tia trist'?   That I am so sorrowful?
A tale of the bygone ages   el tempo jam enterigita   ein Märchen aus alten Zeiten,   Antiqui aevi fabellam   Fabel' el antikva foro   A fable of old Times so terrifies,
Keeps brooding through my brain:   legendo al mi reviviĝis.   das kommt mir nicht aus dem Sinn.   Cur saepe volverim.   ne lasas de mi kun persist'.   Leaves my heart so thoughtful.
 
The faint air cools in the gloaming,   Jam malvarmetiĝas l' aero,   Die Luft ist kühl und es dunkelt,   Vesperascit et frigescit,   Aere fridetas, trankvilas,   The air is cool and it darkens,
And peaceful flows the Rhine,   la Rejno mallaŭte babilas,   und ruhig fließt der Rhein;   Et Rhenus leniter it,   malhelas jam la Rejn'.   And calmly flows the Rhine;

High-throned in yon blue air,   en ora ornamo brilante,   dort oben wunderbar,   Virgo pulcherrima,   jen supre por ador';   Above wonderfully there,
Her golden jewels are shining,   sur supro de l' monto ŝi sidas,   ihr goldnes Geschmeide blitzet,   Auro nitet gemma frontis,   la ora ornamo ridas;   Her beautiful golden attire glances,
She combs her golden hair;   la harojn mistere kombante.   sie kämmt ihr goldenes Haar.   Se pectit auricoma.   ŝi kombas harojn el or'.   She combs her golden hair.
 
She combs with comb that is golden,   La oran kombilon ŝi movas   Sie kämmt es mit goldenem Kamme,   Aureolo pectine pectit,   Ŝi kombas per ora kombilo   With golden comb so lustrous,
And sings a weird refrain   kaj kantas tra l' pura aero,   und singt ein Lied dabei;   Carmen canens procul,   kaj kantas kun pasi';   And thereby a song sings,
That steeps in a deadly enchantment   kaj forto mirinda sin trovas   das hat eine wundersame,   Mirandum id habet modum   mirigas min la elbrilo   It has a tone so wondrous,
The listener's ravished brain:   en tiu ĉi kant' de l'vespero.   gewaltige Melodei.   Nec non virilem simul.   kaj forto de l' melodi'.   That powerful melody rings.
 
The doomed in his drifting shallop,   Ŝipet' iras sur la rivero,   Den Schiffer im kleinen Schiffe   In cymba navitam mille   Ŝipisto ŝipeton gvidas,   The shipper in the little ship
Is tranced with the sad sweet tone,   ŝipisto ektremis de l' kanto,   ergreift es mit wildem Weh;   Angores feri tenent,   lin kaptas ve' de ekzalt'.   It effects with woe sad might;
He sees not the yawing breakers,   kaj blinda por ĉiu danĝero   er schaut nicht die Felsenriffe,   Non videt scopulos ille,   Li ja la rifojn ne vidas',   He does not see the rocky slip,
He sees but the maid alone:   rigardas li al la kantanto.   er schaut nur hinauf in die Höh.   Ocli non si sursum vident.   li vidas nur supren sen halt'.   He only regards dreaded height.
 
The pitiless billwos engulf him!-   Ha, baldaŭ ŝipisto la bela   Ich glaube, die Wellen verschlingen   Opinor undas devorare   Mi kredas, ke ondoj tiras   I believe the turbulent waves
So perish sailor and bark;   perdiĝis sub l' akvoturnado;   am Ende Schiffer und Kahn;   Nautam cum navicula,   la ŝipon funden de l' Rejn';   Swallow the last shipper and boat;
And this, with her baleful singing,   ĝin Lorelej' faris kruela,   und das hat mit ihrem Singen   Effecit solo canendo   kaj tio de l' kant' eliras   She with her singing craves
Is the Lorelei's gruesome work.   per sia mirinda kantado.   die Lorelei getan.   Lurleia id dea.   de Lorelaj-siren'.   All to visit her magic moat.
