A fable of old Times so terrifies,   Antiqui aevi fabellam   ein Märchen aus alten Zeiten,   A tale of the bygone ages   el tempo jam enterigita   Antikva fabelo restas

Her beautiful golden attire glances,   Auro nitet gemma frontis,   ihr goldnes Geschmeide blitzet,   Her golden jewels are shining,   sur supro de l' monto ŝi sidas,   La belan vizaĝon kronas

And thereby a song sings,   Carmen canens procul,   und singt ein Lied dabei;   And sings a weird refrain   kaj kantas tra l' pura aero,   Kaj dume kantas ŝi.
It has a tone so wondrous,   Mirandum id habet modum   das hat eine wundersame,   That steeps in a deadly enchantment   kaj forto mirinda sin trovas   Mirige tuŝas al koro
That powerful melody rings.   Nec non virilem simul.   gewaltige Melodei.   The listener's ravished brain:   en tiu ĉi kant' de l'vespero.   Sorĉiga la melodi’.
 
The shipper in the little ship   In cymba navitam mille   Den Schiffer im kleinen Schiffe   The doomed in his drifting shallop,   Ŝipet' iras sur la rivero,   Kaj sopiregon eksentas
It effects with woe sad might;   Angores feri tenent,   ergreift es mit wildem Weh;   Is tranced with the sad sweet tone,   ŝipisto ektremis de l' kanto,   Ŝipisto dum sia vetur’;
He does not see the rocky slip,   Non videt scopulos ille,   er schaut nicht die Felsenriffe,   He sees not the yawing breakers,   kaj blinda por ĉiu danĝero   Rifaron li ne priatentas,
He only regards dreaded height.   Ocli non si sursum vident.   er schaut nur hinauf in die Höh.   He sees but the maid alone:   rigardas li al la kantanto.   Al monto rigardas li nur.
 
I believe the turbulent waves   Opinor undas devorare   Ich glaube, die Wellen verschlingen   The pitiless billwos engulf him!-   Ha, baldaŭ ŝipisto la bela   Mi kredas, ke dronos finfine
