                An ancient legend of the Rhine    
 
Ignoro, quid id sibi velit,   Ne scias mi, kial subita   Ich weiß nicht, was soll es bedeuten,   I do not know what it signifies.   I cannot divine what it meaneth,   Min kaptas malgaj' en la koro,
Tristissimus cur sim,   malgaj' en la koro naskiĝis;   daß ich so traurig bin;   That I am so sorrowful?   This haunting nameless pain:   pro kio tia trist'?
Antiqui aevi fabellam   el tempo jam enterigita   ein Märchen aus alten Zeiten,   A fable of old Times so terrifies,   A tale of the bygone ages   Fabel' el antikva foro
Cur saepe volverim.   legendo al mi reviviĝis.   das kommt mir nicht aus dem Sinn.   Leaves my heart so thoughtful.   Keeps brooding through my brain:   ne lasas de mi kun persist'.
 
Vesperascit et frigescit,   Jam malvarmetiĝas l' aero,   Die Luft ist kühl und es dunkelt,   The air is cool and it darkens,   The faint air cools in the gloaming,   Aere fridetas, trankvilas,
Et Rhenus leniter it,   la Rejno mallaŭte babilas,   und ruhig fließt der Rhein;   And calmly flows the Rhine;   And peaceful flows the Rhine,   malhelas jam la Rejn'.
Cacumen montis lucescit,   per oro de l'sun' en vespero   der Gipfel des Berges funkelt   The summit of the mountain hearkens   The thirsty summits are drinking   La monto surpinte brilas
Dum Phoebus occidit.   la supro de l' monto rebrilas.   im Abendsonnenschein.   In evening sunshine line.   The sunset's flooding wine;   vespere en rava scen'.
 
Sedet in summo montis   Plej belan knabinon mi vidas:   Die schönste Jungfrau sitzet   The most beautiful Maiden entrances   The loveliest maiden is sitting   Tre ĉarma feino sidas,
Virgo pulcherrima,   en ora ornamo brilante,   dort oben wunderbar,   Above wonderfully there,   High-throned in yon blue air,   jen supre por ador';
Auro nitet gemma frontis,   sur supro de l' monto ŝi sidas,   ihr goldnes Geschmeide blitzet,   Her beautiful golden attire glances,   Her golden jewels are shining,   la ora ornamo ridas;
Se pectit auricoma.   la harojn mistere kombante.   sie kämmt ihr goldenes Haar.   She combs her golden hair.   She combs her golden hair;   ŝi kombas harojn el or'.
 
Aureolo pectine pectit,   La oran kombilon ŝi movas   Sie kämmt es mit goldenem Kamme,   With golden comb so lustrous,   She combs with comb that is golden,   Ŝi kombas per ora kombilo
Carmen canens procul,   kaj kantas tra l' pura aero,   und singt ein Lied dabei;   And thereby a song sings,   And sings a weird refrain   kaj kantas kun pasi';
Mirandum id habet modum   kaj forto mirinda sin trovas   das hat eine wundersame,   It has a tone so wondrous,   That steeps in a deadly enchantment   mirigas min la elbrilo
Nec non virilem simul.   en tiu ĉi kant' de l'vespero.   gewaltige Melodei.   That powerful melody rings.   The listener's ravished brain:   kaj forto de l' melodi'.

Angores feri tenent,   ŝipisto ektremis de l' kanto,   ergreift es mit wildem Weh;   It effects with woe sad might;   Is tranced with the sad sweet tone,   lin kaptas ve' de ekzalt'.
Non videt scopulos ille,   kaj blinda por ĉiu danĝero   er schaut nicht die Felsenriffe,   He does not see the rocky slip,   He sees not the yawing breakers,   Li ja la rifojn ne vidas',
Ocli non si sursum vident.   rigardas li al la kantanto.   er schaut nur hinauf in die Höh.   He only regards dreaded height.   He sees but the maid alone:   li vidas nur supren sen halt'.
 
Opinor undas devorare   Ha, baldaŭ ŝipisto la bela   Ich glaube, die Wellen verschlingen   I believe the turbulent waves   The pitiless billwos engulf him!-   Mi kredas, ke ondoj tiras
Nautam cum navicula,   perdiĝis sub l' akvoturnado;   am Ende Schiffer und Kahn;   Swallow the last shipper and boat;   So perish sailor and bark;   la ŝipon funden de l' Rejn';
Effecit solo canendo   ĝin Lorelej' faris kruela,   und das hat mit ihrem Singen   She with her singing craves   And this, with her baleful singing,   kaj tio de l' kant' eliras
Lurleia id dea.   per sia mirinda kantado.   die Lorelei getan.   All to visit her magic moat.   Is the Lorelei's gruesome work.   de Lorelaj-siren'.
