daß ich so traurig bin;   malgaj' en la koro naskiĝis;   This haunting nameless pain:   Tristissimus cur sim,   That I am so sorrowful?   sed kial tia tim'?
ein Märchen aus alten Zeiten,   el tempo jam enterigita   A tale of the bygone ages   Antiqui aevi fabellam   A fable of old Times so terrifies,   Legendo el pratempa foro

dort oben wunderbar,   en ora ornamo brilante,   High-throned in yon blue air,   Virgo pulcherrima,   Above wonderfully there,   per ora juvelar',
ihr goldnes Geschmeide blitzet,   sur supro de l' monto ŝi sidas,   Her golden jewels are shining,   Auro nitet gemma frontis,   Her beautiful golden attire glances,   kaj ŝia beleco allogas

Den Schiffer im kleinen Schiffe   Ŝipet' iras sur la rivero,   The doomed in his drifting shallop,   In cymba navitam mille   The shipper in the little ship   Ŝipiston en eta boato
ergreift es mit wildem Weh;   ŝipisto ektremis de l' kanto,   Is tranced with the sad sweet tone,   Angores feri tenent,   It effects with woe sad might;   Turmentas koremoci'.
er schaut nicht die Felsenriffe,   kaj blinda por ĉiu danĝero   He sees not the yawing breakers,   Non videt scopulos ille,   He does not see the rocky slip,   Ne ĝenas lin rifo-kaskado,
er schaut nur hinauf in die Höh.   rigardas li al la kantanto.   He sees but the maid alone:   Ocli non si sursum vident.   He only regards dreaded height.   rigardas nur supren al ŝi!
 
Ich glaube, die Wellen verschlingen   Ha, baldaŭ ŝipisto la bela   The pitiless billwos engulf him!-   Opinor undas devorare   I believe the turbulent waves   Ĝis tiras kun si al Rejn-fundo
am Ende Schiffer und Kahn;   perdiĝis sub l' akvoturnado;   So perish sailor and bark;   Nautam cum navicula,   Swallow the last shipper and boat;   la ondoj lin kun boat'.
